Shirley for the Mob

CARING FOR THE MOB

CTCC in partnership with Yerin Aboriginal Health and Nunyara Aboriginal Health Unit of CCLHD along with the support, through consultation, of other local organisations such as Darkinjung Local Aboriginal Land Council aims to use a co-branded Shirley Shuttle vehicle driven by Aboriginal volunteers to increase the number of local Aboriginal people attending specialist appointments and receiving the vital cancer treatment they require.

The aims and objectives in stages are;

  • To design and implement a culturally sensitive subsidised transport service largely administered by local Aboriginal people to increase participation numbers of cancer patients receiving required treatment.
  • The program included an EOI art competition within the local community to design the artwork for the vehicle.
  • Once we have the interest of the community we hope to start breaking down the barriers associated with historical experiences and focus on a new service being provided and operated by their community.
  • We will be working within the community to find suitable volunteer drivers who will be trained by the professional staff at CTCC and once competent will become self-sufficient but know they have help and support when required.
  • By having Aboriginal drivers it is hoped that the community feel comfortable and at ease to utilise the service and attendance at appointments and treatment increases.
